Cancellation of the importer number for importing into the United States

Starting September 18, 2026, U.S. Customs will cancel the importer numbers of exporting companies if the information contained in the CBP Form 5106 is incomplete or does not match the information used during importation and clearance.

U.S. Customs will send the cancellation notice to the most recently used email address by the Importer of Record. If this address is incorrect, the importing company might not be informed in time about the cancellation until the shipment is blocked by U.S. Customs during clearance.

The Customs Form 5106 is used to request an importer number from U.S. Customs. It is generally used for DDP imports by exporters who do not have a U.S. subsidiary or by exporters who do not have a tax ID.

The importer number issued by U.S. Customs during importation into the United States is the alternative to the U.S. tax ID, namely the EIN.

The direct consequence of the cancellation of the U.S. importer number is that shipments will be stopped at customs, and it will be impossible to import into America until the situation is resolved.

We advise verifying in advance the importing company data recorded by U.S. Customs to avoid blockages of goods to be imported into America.

Crucial Importance of the Importer of Record's Address

In particular, the headquarters address of the importing company used to fill out Form 5106 must match the actual location of the exporting company in the United States and the address declared during importation into the United States.

The address of a registered agent, a customs broker's address, a freight forwarder's office, a P.O. box, or a business center in America, or any third-party address are no longer accepted or valid for importing into the United States.

The email address and phone number must belong to the IOR.

POA Power of Attorney to the Customs Broker for Clearance Operations

The power of attorney sent to the customs broker must come directly from the Importer of Record and not be relayed by a freight forwarder or another third party.
