Starting August 23, 2025, Poste Italiane stopped accepting and sending packages for commercial shipments to the United States while awaiting compliance with the new American customs regulations. To add to the confusion, the technical instructions from U.S. customs were only received on August 15, leaving postal operators with few days to adapt 

This block was necessary to comply with a U.S. executive order (dated July 30, 2025) that eliminated the customs exemption (de minimis) up to $800. Recall that under the de minimis rule, customs duties were not applied on orders up to $800

In practice, customs duties for importing into the United States are now applied on orders of any value. Besides the customs duty, delivery times for shipments to the U.S. with carriers like DHL, UPS, or Fedex have significantly increased, and we have seen cases where an express shipment took 10 days to be delivered to the USA

Also note that since December 11, 2024, express carriers need confirmation from the American customer to proceed with the delivery of the order to the recipient in America. What happens in practice is that carriers call or email the recipient in the USA for order confirmation. In the absence of a response, the order is returned to Italy after 4 business days.
