Ever wonder what New York City’s Gen Z get up to on the weekend, day to night? I’ll break it down for you. It’s 9am on a Saturday morning. You’re still recovering from Friday’s night out, but there’s no way you’re gonna miss your donation-based 10am yoga class. As you step outside, you see New Yorkers walking down the block for early morning bagels, families on a stroll with their kids, and Gen Zers making their way to the nearest up-and-coming coffee shop. Walking home from your local yoga studio, you’ll typically stop at one of the many neighborhood cafes for a sweet treat (quintessential Gen Z) and an iced matcha, rewarding yourself for the morning’s hard work.
After a quick shower and a fresh change of clothes, it’s already the afternoon, and you’ve got plans to meet your friends at Washington Square Park in the West Village. The iconic park is right next to the NYU campus and is known to attract Gen Zers from all around New York City due to its eclectic and artistic vibe. You’ll see skateboarders doing tricks on the steps, musicians playing their instruments for loose change, and groups of Gen Zers all dressed according to the latest counterculture fashion trends. Hopping on a CitiBike with a picnic blanket and snacks in your bag, you get to the park just in time to catch the afternoon sun.
A few hours later, it’s time to go back home and get ready for a Saturday night out, making sure your outfit and makeup will withstand an evening of dinner, drinks, and dancing. Before getting ready, you take an hour to lay, rest, and scroll through social media to catch up on the day’s memes, news, and messages from friends. Feeling restored, you grab your Sandy Liang purse and slip on your Camper flats to head out for the night.
Listening to the new Slayyyter song with your Apple wired headphones, you head over to the yellow subway line to meet your friends in Chinatown. Just a few minutes walk from the Canal Street station, you get to Mei Lai Wah, a small but viral spot known for its affordable but delicious meals (an NYC Gen Z favorite). Dinner is followed by a round of drinks nearby at Mr. Purple in the Lower East Side. The neighborhood is full of various dive bars for NYC’s Gen Zers to hang out, drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), and socialize with friends, letting go of the stress from work or school.
But the night’s not quite over yet. There’s a myriad of nightclubs for Gen Zers to pick from for quality post-bar dancing. With your group of friends, you hop on the L subway line to get to Brooklyn, a borough that’s recently been occupied by Gen Zers moving to the city or those who can’t afford to live in Manhattan. You and all your friends agree on one of the many nightclubs, taking into consideration which DJ is playing, the price of the entry fee, and the typical crowd that gathers at each one.
The night ends with more drinks, more dancing, and more catching up with other Gen Zers sharing the NYC lifestyle. You make plans to meet with friends in the upcoming week before calling an Uber to drive you home, trying your best not to think about the responsibilities of the week ahead. At least next weekend you get to do it all over again!
