Prior Notice is a mandatory document that must accompany shipments of food products to be imported into the United States.

Whenever food is shipped to the United States, the so-called Prior Notice must also be completed and sent to US customs.

There are several types of Prior Notices that differ according to how food is imported into the US. In practice, the function of the Prior Notice is to notify the US customs authorities, where the inspectors of the FDA - Food and Drug Administration - are also assigned, that a shipment of food products is on its way.

To fill in the Prior Notice you need some basic information on the exporting company and on the US importer, as well as the details of the shipment itself:

1. company name and address of the company exporting food products
    
2. FDA registration number assigned to the exporting company
    
3. Point of Contact with email and telephone number for both exporter and importer
    
4. name of the courier [Fedex, UPS, etc.], or of the shipper who will ship to the US
    
5. port or airport of entry into the United States (remember to also mention the state)
    
6. tracking number, if sent by express courier, or airway bill number, if sent by courier
    
7. flight number and airline, if shipping by air, or ship name and voyage number, if shipping by sea
