Selling Fashion and Clothing in the USA: New York Speeds Up the Green Revolution in the American Fashion Industry

The American Fashion Capital Has Introduced a Sustainability Law for Major Fashion Brands to Export and Sell Clothing in the United States

A few days ago, the Fashion Act was introduced in New York: a bill that would make New York the first American state to hold major fashion brands accountable for their environmental impact.

The law is sponsored by State Senator Alessandra Biaggi and Assemblymember Anna R. Kelles, supported by a coalition of nonprofit organizations for environmental sustainability in the fashion sector and even by Stella McCartney. If approved, the law will require fashion companies doing business in New York with over $100 million in revenue to be more responsible and transparent about their supply chain.

Fashion companies will need to map at least 50% of their supply chain, from the farms where raw materials originate to the factories and logistics. Brands should then disclose which parts of the supply chain have the greatest environmental and social impact and make concrete plans to reduce those numbers: these are the new measures taken from the top to try to establish a new trend in the U.S. fashion sector, increasingly committed to spreading the values of sustainability and the green economy, starting from small businesses that have begun selling clothing in the USA.

The Demand for Sustainability from American Consumers is Stronger Than Ever

Companies with a Focus on Sustainability are More Likely to Grow in the American Market

It's now clear that the demand from American consumers is moving toward the green economy and zero-waste philosophy. That's why institutions are getting involved as well.

After all, all brands can individually strive to be more sustainable, more ethical, and more responsible, but the problem of sustainability in the fashion industry won't be solved solely by companies or American consumers. This leaves us with only one solution: policymakers must pass laws that reduce the negative impact of the fashion sector on the environment.

Consequently, it's possible that the new law on fashion companies' supply chains in the United States will reshape the production logic of the fashion industry and the purchasing habits of American consumers. This is highly probable, as this measure would affect all the most well-known fashion brands, from American companies to international players in fast fashion and luxury (H&M, Shein, Prada, and LVMH).
