Gen Z and Sustainability

For many Gen Zers in America, sustainability is not just a trendy buzzword. Rather, it has become a core value when making decisions about which products to buy and which brands to support. From carbon emissions during shipping to the use of regenerative materials in production, Gen Z is more conscientious than ever about sustainable consumption, and the impact they are leaving on the environment when they choose to shop. While some fashion and beauty brands are unconcerned with promoting sustainability, many of them are taking note of this new generation’s ethical principles when it comes to environmental protection. Here are some currently trending products and brands that align with sustainable practices without compromising aesthetic and functionality:

Reusable Water Bottles

Starting off strong, we have the golden product – water bottles. Plastic bottles are a thing of the past. Nowadays, you can catch almost every American Gen Zer with a reusable water bottle. The generation’s dedication to reusability has boosted the popularity of a myriad of brands such as Hydro Flask, Stanley 1913, and Owala. These bottles are durable, long-lasting, and with consistent use, they minimize plastic waste while lowering your personal carbon footprint.

Patagonia

Patagonia, a famous brand known for outdoor gear and clothing, promotes a circular economy in which customers are given the option to have their clothes repaired instead of having to buy new, an initiative they call “Worn Wear.” With this implementation clothes become recyclable and renewable, encouraging sustainable practices by reducing overconsumption, rejecting fast-fashion, and centering longevity.

Reformation

Reformation is a women’s clothing brand that emphasizes modern minimalist designs and romantic vintage aesthetics while pioneering the sustainability movement in fashion culture. The company is carbon-neutral and uses deadstock fabrics as well as organic and recycled cotton, serving as an example of sustainable production without sacrificing their fashion-forward styles. Although Reformation is hardly considered affordable, many Gen Zers choose sustainable brands even if it means having to pay a higher price. Sustainability often goes hand-in-hand with durability, so many of these young consumers make the conscious decision to invest in sustainable products that have a long lifespan.

Youth to the People

Youth to the People is another company with a commitment to sustainability, selling a range of skincare products centered around plant-centric formulas, using clean ingredients like kale, green tea, and other antioxidant elements. Youth to the People is among a handful of beauty brands that offer refillable and lightweight packaging that eliminates the material and product waste that’s typical with single-use packaging.

America’s Gen Z continues to consider sustainability in their consumer decisions. Their desire for environmental preservation is shaping the cultural landscape, especially in the sphere of fashion and beauty. With this demand, we hope to continue seeing a rise in sustainability initiatives among trending brands.
